I used these in basic training when I enlisted in the army in 1978. as indicated by our Viet Nam veteran (and personally experienced in the forests of Ft. Jackson, South Carolina): 1. start with a clean, dry 2 shelter half. make the curtain as tight as possible (using 2 half of shelter, of course) 3. have the flaps at the bottom facing outwards. 4. dig a trench around the tent, shoveling dirt excavated above the flaps 5. the downslope, leaving way for any water in
